Holly -- <<Gerald Ford's pardoning Richard Nixon, rightly or wrongly probably cost him that election.>>

Very likely, and IMO unfortunate. Ford was not brilliant, but he was an effective politician and would have inherited a most capable cabinet. Of course, the economy would have tanked anyway...

>>wasn't Jimmy Carter a successful businessman and scientist prior to his entry into politics?

He inherited a peanut and warehouse business - anyone who knows about agricultural programs knows that the peanut allotments determine who can grow peanuts for sale. It's the most restrictive of all government agriculture programs and guarantees a profit to anyone minimally competent.

Some just "rent" the right. Anyway, inheriting a business is not really any measure of success.

It went bankrupt about the time Carter left office. Miss Lillian always did say that "Billy was the smart one".(not kidding!)

As for the scientist, sure he had a degree in nuclear physics, but his executive order is the reason why we have all that nuclear waste piling up all over the country. Because of Jimmy, we can't reprocess nuclear waste like every other country!
