I think Y2K will increasingly help reinforce the importance of standardization to plant managers.

After all the headaches that legacy systems have created, managers worth their salt should WNDR why they let "software du jour" put them in a position where they have to fear shutdowns and system failures simply because of the date. Some will surely try over the next couple of years to avoid repeating history by chosing a vendor that didn't make its clients totally re-write their software just to resolve Y2K issues.

This trend probably will taper off quickly after midnight on 12/31/1999, however, because we tend to forget the expected tragedies that never occur quickly. During this build-up period WNDR is better positioned than others to benefit because of the breadth of FactorySuite's solution.

I see at least a modest percentage increase in customers that try to standardize on one industrial software vendor. These guys are going to base their decisions on things such as track record, available products, and vision. WNDR has a great story to tell in each area and stands to benefit most from increased standardization.
