I would like to make supplementary post to the one the other day where I made the argument, supported by economists, that the likely effects if Trump implemets his tariff and deportation plans would be at the minimum a return to inflation and increasing interest rates followed by a recession in the US, Canada, and other countries. Also, if worst comes to worst they could trigger a worldwide depression like the Dirty Thirties. I will remind you the primary cause of that awful period was tariff wars.

But on reflection, we also need to add in the strong inflationary effects of Trump's proposed tax cuts for billionaires.

And we also need to remember that Trump has been musing about interfering with the US Central Bank. We have seen this movie before. A few years ago Erdogan, the President of Turkey, also imposed foolish economic plans which resulted in a spike in inflation. When Turkey's Central Bank tried to increase interest rates in response, Erdogan interfered and kept them from doing so.

The result was a huge spike in inflation, to over 50%, and the Turkish economy will take many years to recover from.

I will close with a ray of hope. I was reminded that Trump also promised mass deportations when he took office in 2016 and which he was fortunately unable to carry out.
