Mark(s),

Thats 10 million MR heads to IBM's OEM customers and does not account for their internal consumption. Also, you seem to be counting Read Rites TOTAL head production including their TFI.

best

Re: Per RDRT's 10Q, they sold appx 22million heads/Qtr. Compare this with IBM's proud claim to 9million in the last 5 months, and you see they've captured about 25%/Qtr of RDRT sales- not to mean that RDRT has lost any sales though.

Actually I'm quite impressed by it. Even assuming your 25% is correct (it's based on assuming a flat number of heads per month), how many industries can you tick off where a come from zero vendor picks up 25% of a market leader's sales in a short period? If you were looking at static market positions, then your inference would be correct. If you look at it as a dynamic position where IBM has grown to that position just recently then I see it as a more impressive accomplishment.

Let's say that I look at these numbers and see a rapidly rising market position with no indication of a top yet, while you're apparently looking at them and seeing a modest total market position as of today.

A different perspective ....
