<< So you're not scared of the big bad LU wolf at CIEN's door >>

Nope. LU has been and still is behind CIEN if you ask me. There will be plenty of business for both as well. Show me a business without competition and I will show you a business that isn't very profitable. LU isn't after CIEN for no reason. There are huge profits to be made from the explosion in WDM.

<< even with Gilder's excommunication from his Ascending Technologies list >>

I don't read that report so if he took CIEN off it who did he replace them with? I'm not aware of any other publicly traded WDM company on his list. Did he add LU to his list? Or were they already on it?

<< and that nasty little IPR law suit from Pirelli still hanging around? >>

Tech companies sue each other all the time. That's the least of CIEN's worries. I would be more worried about LU than the lawsuit.

<< If you're still enthusiastic, I'll take another look >>

I am wildly enthusiastic about the company's prospects for the future (even more than TLAB, I'm afraid to admit). I was not wildly enthusiastic with the price at 63 but you shave $2 billion off the price and I begin to warm up to the notion. 5 more points to the downside and I will be so enthusiastic that you will be sorry for even bringing it up!

<< So maybe CIEN will lower my portfolio's beta? >>

I don't know about that, but if you want as close to a pure play as possible for the future of optical bandwith CIEN is the one. I would like someone to show me a better candidate.

Now for price on the other hand, I'm not always good at picking bottoms on falling knives. But I believe in a year or two CIEN will be closer to 102 than 42.
