Maybe he played the "I'll retire if you make me break it up" card and the financial types didn't flinch with "don't let the door hit you on the way out, we'll escort you out today."

Otherwise, he'd probably stay around long enough to pick his successor. Even with a health issue, he'd probably still want to contribute to preserving his legacy and pick a successor who had the same vision.

I agree. And much of the underperformance had zero to do with Pat. INTC is broken.
