I spoke with Michael STONEBRAKER on Friday. He gave a one hour talk at the Washington (DC) area Informix User Group conference (all day affair that had vendors like BRIO, LogicWorks, IQ S/w, etc).

The talk was fantastic -- DO NOT, repeat NOT, miss any opportunity to hear this guy. I took the day off work, paid $30 for the meeting, just for the privilege. Was pleased to confirm that he is a) staying around; b) articulate about the "middleware" slant (e.g. tp monitor type functions) that will be moving more into the db engine realm -- to make sense of the conflicting "focus on DB" and "we are going to be the middleware" messages.

I last met him at Engres 15 or more years ago and he is smart but not arrogant (rare in this business) and had a lot of good thoughts about where the future might lead. Having had John Cullinane sit in his living room and decline to invest in the Ingres startup, and subsequently watch the leading DBMS vendor of the day loose utterly its market position, I know he won't let INFORMIX get blind sided by 'the next big thing' -- whatever it is.

Having also heard Bob F. at an investor meeting in December, I sure feel good being on this team. Maybe those big bucks I lost will come back sooner than I thought...

Lovin' these guys, worrin' about MSFT (two of my guys going to the SQL SERVER 7.0 BETA conference in LA next week...)
