I wonder if is a good idea for Informix *not* to initially focus their efforts on the SQL Server and Windows NT market. The margin is much lower here, where the price they can sell the product for is lower than their more enterprise level products and it will take more expenses to effectively compete against Microsoft and their domain of the PC work group. I personally do not consider Microsoft to be able to compete on the enterprise level. However, having a solution available in this area of work group PCs for their customer who purchase their server software is useful as a value added leverage that can be used in working a sale. Once they are able to establish some base of users for their PC product in this way, and more importantly have established themselves with a broader base of customers with their higher-end server product, they will be in a better position to pursue the sale of their PC products.
