In addition, although I wasn’t sure I should share this, NOTABOT was a set of picks from an AI chat bot. It’s in third to last place. Dart LANZAR, i.e., “dart thrower” if you translate from the Spanish, is in dead last. It was generated by randomly picking letters from the alphabet, then searching on corresponding biotech stocks that started with the same letter. In some cases, I did intentionally drop penny stocks that seemed on the road to nowhere. In others, I generated another random number to pick the stock.

I think way back when the Wall Street Journal ran an article that described throwing darts at their stock listings a seeing how the resulting “portfolio” compared to the market in general. IIRC, that method of picking fared better than mine did.

Clearly, you were all much better at stock picking than these two methods.

Regardless, both “fake” accounts will donate $50 to the charity of the winners choice, and my account will donate $100.

I hope you are not offended by my increasing the number of contestants in the pool.

Well this is about it for the 2024 Biotech Values Charity Stock Picking Contest. There will be a final report after the close of markets on New Year’s Eve, but with only a single day of trading (and historically a very quiet one), I think the story won’t change that much from today.

This last week wasn’t one for lots of big swings either. The NASDAQ Composite showed a respectable +0.8% gain, as did the NASDAQ Biotech Index with +0.6%. The individual stocks were pretty much “Not much to talk about", with a range from -16% to +29%. The average portfolio gained +$570 for the week, though YTD the average is underwater by -$2.3k.
At the moment, TOMATO’s top rank for YTD (+$49k) seems unassailable, with a lead of $15k over second place BLADERUNNER. However, the second through fourth positions are still in play, with a spread of $3.1k. BULBAMAN had a bad week, moving him from second down to fourth. JR_95 turned in the best return for the week (+$5.8) which improved his YTD standing ( a $3k loss for the year) from eighth to seventh.
The final report will include the overall performance for all the portfolios’ holdings, a few comments on the year, and a “so long, and thanks for all the fish” finish.
