Part Two )

Many words in the article. Let me see if an old man can boil it down.

With instant access to all the knowledge in the world, we have become dumber.

Had a party last night, several of us were discussing how to fix the problems with the U.S. economy. Because of my brilliant insights into the matter, I was doing most of the talking.

I noticed a lady in the room constantly using her cell phone. I asked her if we needed to be quite so she could make a call. No, she said, she was "fact checking" what I was saying. I asked her join in the conversation, she said she had no idea what we were talking about.

Stop to think about that for a second. She is "fact checking" me but had no idea what we are talking about. Sound familiar?

With cell phones in classrooms, there is no question a teacher can ask that cannot be instantly answered. But we have become a society of parrots. Endlessly "scrolling" with our phones accessing great wisdom and accumulated knowledge and learning-----nothing. Most do not even know what the words mean that they "parrot".

And it's not just students, I know many adults that spend hours each day "fact checking" everyone and everything around them. But, like the students, they retain nothing and are the poorer for having the world at their fingertips.
