Granted there are enormous difficulties and costs in ultradeep drilling. Except for the possibility of finding a billion barrel field, you would wonder why anyone would undertake such a thing. If exploration costs $5 a barrel, and if production costs another $5 a barrel, and if the pessimists are right and oil goes down to $12 a barrel, that only leaves $2 billion profit. Bummer.

Baird
