I used to think that Divx was pretty stupid, but I have discussed this with some friends and it may have some merit. They're contention is this: say they are out shopping at Walmart or Kmart or whatever, and they want to watch a movie that night. They can just simply purchase the movie using Divx for 5 dollars from the store they are in vs. having to drive to a rental or paying 12 or more for purchase of a DVD movie. They don't have to bring it back, which in their mind is a big plus.

Of course, this assumes that these would be sold through retail stores. But it is perfect for things like grocery stores and the like, with lots of traffic. If the price is low enough, it would almost become an impulse item.

So it may not be as stupid as I thought. I wonder what impact this would have on Cube long term. Since they make encoders, I have to assume they could make them for Divx along with DVD.
