I'll help get the last 200 going, because I'm going to start a debate. Of course, the sad and
unfortunate thing is that I won't get 36,000, or even 35,900, because someone else will.

Good luck! I will be gone for awhile. Later thread<G>

I think that ASND -- which is big in electrical switching -- should acquire CIEN --
which is big in optical transmitting (and, ultimately, switching). ASND should not do
this if it plans to be acquired by LU (which has its own vaporware optical product).

Gary,

Are you smoking that stuff again?<vbg> Remember CPQ?

Lu has a great switch...5ess

I think taking your '98 Ascend profits and buying LU,NT,T is a safe long term strategy!

With an acquisition of CIEN, ASND would cement its relationship with WCOM as a full service supplier (WCOM already purchases from CIEN) and would further cement a new relationship with ATT (an early funder of CIEN).

And what happens if LU gets the WCOM contracts after ASND's tied at the hip to CIEN?

If ASND makes a bid for CIEN, I'm out of here in a flash.

Just my novice take.

gary, i have the utmost respect for you, (anytime you see this beginning, you know nothing good follows).

5.4 billion at 6% = 324 million a year

why not put that 5.4 billion in a cd at 6% and make twice as much (324 mil in cd vs 160 mil income from cien) with no risk?

i know if i had 5.4 billion i would not purchase cien, the wife would shoot me. i would by the yankees and pocket the difference.

Gary:

Keep the debate going? on the ASND/CIEN merge (it past thru my mind). I think the fit is financially difficult (but it didn't stop WCOM) but strategically desirable. OTOH, I believe LU will announce the purchase of ASND in the Jul/Aug time frame.

Always conjecturing,

Ron

Can what affected CIEN also affect ASND?
Since the big hit to Ciena was the fact that Worldcom is changing their purchasing from 2 year to just in time. Could this affect ASND as well? Worldcom owns UUNET which is a very big customer of ASND.

Just a concern of mine.
