Tapes? I doubt tapes are significantly more reliable than Zip.

Well, you can doubt all you want but there's a reason why bet-your-business backup solutions use multi-track tapes and it's not simply capacity. Tapes are an extremely reliable storage medium. Optical is even better. Zip is generally used by children and some businesses for occasional sneaker-net information transfers. Anybody using it for backup purposes is playing Russian Roulette with the company's data.

Brendan, >> Tapes? I doubt tapes are significantly more reliable than Zip. <<

Not sure about the DAT but for older tape standard. It is not very reliable. I suspect the reliability is similar to Zip. I heard some horrible stories that when attempt to restore old archive from the tape backup, unrecoverable data loss occur occasionally. Fortunately, they usually has multiple backups. Optical is the way to go for reliability.
