<<there's been a lot more seen of Clik! than of HiFD>>>

Agreed..... so you would think, according to their originally slated plan of introduction, we might have heard of some evaluation units being highly praised in the media (factually, not just the opinionated one's we've seen). By now, in the "process" (referencing Clik! as an example) the Sony HiFD should have already announced a few partners and really, some OEM qualifying announcements should be well in the past, but I've heard nothing of this type announcement from Sony, so far. Please fill me in if I've missed them. To be realistic, with Sony's engineering and manufacturing prowess ( as alluded to in the bear slams), the slam dunk on the Zip will either have to occur further out on the time line than previously mentioned in their technology announcement or, they are keeping the process of qualifying and acceptance secret. I doubt either case ends up as reality, especially not in consideration of the competitive pressures you've mentioned. The (bear) logic for an OEM not wanting to "buy out" Iomega at these ridiculously low levels relates to the logic that preempts them from using Sony HiFD. This one thing alone represents the biggest uphill battle for Sony if they go the route of OEM vs. retail (my opinion only, assuming they really do a product launch).

I agree jwk, I just don't see Sony getting a free ride to floppy replacement heaven.

I cruised their web site last week and was more impressed by what I didn't see than what I did see. Their HiFD section consists of a one page description of the proposed product and a stated intent to make it available to consumers in spring 98. No news releases, no updates, no promotion, no nothing.

Sony's DVD section contrasts sharply with their HiFD page. Sony's stated intent to be a leader in DVD technology is backed up with lots of product promotion, news releases, product specs, upcoming ship dates announced 3-4 months prior to shipment, etc.

It's looking more and more to me like HiFD's comdex debut was just a test of the water for Sony. IOM has responded with "turn up the volume" and Sony's cost/benefit picture for HiFD is looking bleaker and bleaker every day. And good luck trying to get the major box makers to help them out.

If Sony want's to replace the floppy drive they'd come out way ahead just to buy IOM outright!
