I am not sure how much things changed from as far as Trump is concerned.

What has changed is that US relations with both of the other 3 superpowers (Russia, China) are so catastrophic, after 4 years of Biden, that the original plan of befriending Putin to tilt Russia towards the US is not going to work.

BTW,, Mearsheimer, no fan of Trump, thinks that was a good approach by Trump to get Russia on our side. Mearsheimer also views NATO expansion, which turned Russia into an enemy as a fatal mistake by the US.

The way out of this pickle could be for the US to neuter NATO, to mostly withdraw from Europe, even if not officially withdraw from NATO. Which would make NATO less of a thread to Russia. NATO without the US is too weak to be a threat.
