Always on the year's big meetings, this week's conference comes at a good time... Market's fears regarding Asia have taken a back seat to renewed optimism over solid long-term earnings growth... Dell's comment regarding robust demand for PCs also encouraging... Conference will keep focus off Asian problems and on new technologies... Stocks can get a big boost from such meetings... Oracle is a perfect example, as stock rallied more than 45% after CEO Larry Ellison made positive comments at the NB Montgomery Securities Tech Conference in late January... Among stocks to watch are Microsoft, Intel, Yahoo! and Texas Instruments. Earnings will be the other driving force this week, as a slew of second tier names are scheduled to report their quarterly results Industry Briefs Computer Systems & Peripherals | Networking | Software | Semiconductor | Chip Equipment | Telecom Equipment Computer Systems & Peripherals Brief: Dell extended its earnings-related rally, gaining another 3 9/16... Strong momentum, impressive earnings/revenue growth, earnings upgrades and the bullish market tone suggest that stock should remain on an upward path... Next target 135-140... Rest of the group failed to follow Dell's lead, with Gateway giving back 1 3/16 and Digital shedding 1... Apple eased back to the 20 level amid news that company's share of the educational market continued to decline... Share in CY97 totalled 26.8%, down from CY96 level of 41.4% and CY93 figure of 61%... Stock's modest reaction stems from fact that news was largely anticipated... SoundView cut its rating on Adaptec to hold from buy following ADPT's announcement that it was buying Symbios for $775 mln in cash... Disk drive group likely to come under scrutiny at Tech conference regarding near- and long-term outlook... If group exhibits decent momentum over next few days will be sign that street suspects that worst is over.
