Dave---since I trade options a good bit, what happened to you has me somewhat concerned, so I am doing a little more research. This is from the CBOE---

When can I anticipate being assigned?

You can anticipate being assigned any time your option becomes in the money. Individual investors may be automatically assigned or exercised at expiration by The Options Clearing Corporation if the option is 3/4 of a point or more in the money. Also, most brokerage firms have rules under which options will be automatically exercised; check with your broker to determine which automatic exercise rule may apply.

I also intend to call my broker, DLJ, and talk to them.

Were your puts for Feb. experation?

If your puts were for experation in Feb., then option experation would have been friday (20th). Most brokerage firms will protect their clients by automatically exercising positions that are a half or 3/4 point in the money.

If your option was not for Feb. exp. then your broker has no right to exer. without your permission.
