Briefing.com comments on semiconductor equipment stocks:

Group could get a little boost this morning, however, after Bloomberg reported late Friday that CFM Technologies was holding informal sales talks with Applied Materials and Lam Research... Though nothing serious, could see some early buying in anticipation of future industry consolidation... Given situation in Asia, time is ripe for such activity.

Baird, I see it going the other way. The economies here will benefit a little from the lower price of oil, but right now the main thing needed here is access to lines of capital, ie credit. Given that, the economies here will rebound, with that starting to happen (I estimate) around the beginning of the 3rd calendar quarter. The pick up in the economies here will in turn stimulate the demand for oil, and, coincident with the seasonal demand increase in the US, lift the price of oil. Therefore, I see the recovery of the economies here as the beginning of the return rise in the price of oil.

jess.

Baird, I'm having a curious problem at the moment. I don't know which area to jump into, drillers or semi stocks. I see a lot of confidence returning to Korea. The rest of the region, particularly Japan, Hong Kong and Indonesia don't look so good, but Korea is coming along and Taiwan is strong, which gives me confidence that the order pushouts in Asia are about at an end (although some may still have to be reported that haven't been yet,) in which case the argument is strong that the bottom in semi fundamentals has been reached. I know that some would wait until DRAM prices bottom out and the dumping stops, but that may be too long to wait.

On the other hand, oil may be getting close to its bottom too, in which case the drillers are due for a major league advance. This week will be rough on the $OSX, but after that, I see little downside there, and a lot of upside.

jess.

PS - I like the same firms over there that you do, with the addition of FGII. jb.

Considering that Indonesia's US$ income depends on oil production.....it could mean real bad news.
