<<I would imagine that SOME of the ISP traffic will migrate to the caching architecture.>>
Some sooner than others. As far as Ancor, perhaps the addition of Paul Lidsky from OneLink to the board back in October signals some attention directed towards the networking market. Regards. ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Demon Internet Standardizes on NetApp Appliances in Million Dollar Infrastructure Investment
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 23, 1998-- Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTAP - news), the leading provider of dedicated data-access appliances, and Demon Internet Ltd., Europe's largest independent Internet Service Provider, today announced a strategic partnership including an infrastructure purchase valued at over $1 million (US).
Demon will leverage the world's largest installation of Network Appliance's (NetApp) NetCache products and a significant installation of its filers to bring the ultimate in Internet performance to the worldwide online community.
Demon standardized enterprise-wide on NetApp's caching and filing appliances, validating the data-access appliance approach. Recently investing in ten NetApp appliances, Demon will deploy its core Internet services -- mail, news, Web hosting, FTP, caching, and internal testing -- on NetApp systems, completing the replacement of its entire existing storage and data-access architecture with NetApp products.
In addition, Demon was integrally involved in tuning the functionality of NetApp's recently released NetCache family of products, and the two companies plan to continue working together to pioneer future technologies.
''NetApp understands that international ISPs have critical performance constraints that need to be resolved while minimizing extraordinary bandwidth costs,'' said Dan Warmenhoven, president and CEO of Network Appliance. ''As a leading, innovative ISP in Europe, Demon is the ideal partner in creating a quality of service solution for European Internet customers.''
''NetApp appliances' unprecedented price/performance, reliability and ease of management made them the unquestionable choice for our data access product standard,'' said Cliff Stanford, managing director of Demon Internet.
''We trust NetApp to help ensure our customers' satisfaction today and for years to come -- we endorse the appliance technology approach and are confident in the company's ability to consistently deliver excellence.''
Million Dollar Infrastructure Investment
Demon's significant infrastructure investment keeps pace with the company's tremendous growth over the past year and illustrates Demon's notable commitment to customer satisfaction. Demon's standardization on NetApp represents a strategic partnership for all of the ISP's network caching and filer storage needs.
Demon chose NetApp specifically for mission-critical criteria such as speed, reliability, ease of administration, and bandwidth savings. NetApp's products allow Demon to deliver the highest standard of service to its customers.
Best Price/Performance
After evaluating other prominent data-access hardware and software, Demon selected NetApp's appliance approach for its price/performance advantage. Demon found that one NetCache C630 appliance does the work of multiple standard Unix systems, supporting the highest throughput of any system tested.
Testing by Demon has shown the NetApp products to produce consistent and low response times. Demon Internet users will see improved performance after making a simple browser adjustment to register for the cache.
The first UK ISP with T3 (45 MB per second) connectivity to the United States, Demon also appreciated the real savings in telecommunication costs from the NetApp deployment. And, because Demon experienced a 40 percent hit rate on the NetCache products currently deployed, the ISP is able to reduce costs by delaying purchase of extra international bandwidth as the additional appliances are implemented.
Unprecedented Reliability
Over the course of more than eighteen months, Demon experienced zero down time due to NetApp filers, ''making the NetApp name synonymous with reliability,'' according to Gerry Lawrence, Head of Network Services for Demon Internet.
Demon will take advantage of NetCache's fully integrated RAID and 99.99 percent availability (before failover), as well as NetCache's enhanced security features such as filtering, authenticating user access privileges and establishing audit trails for user and site access pattern analysis.
Ease of Management
Demon found NetApp's zero admin approach a winning proposition after contemplating the complex hardware/software integration, support and upgrades required by the alternatives.
More than 1.5 terabytes of data will be accessed through NetApp's appliances at Demon upon full deployment of its new systems, and Demon can scale NetApp software and appliance products in multiple combinations to meet the future demands of its growing customer base.
Because of the powerful scaleability of NetApp solutions, Demon can easily increase its infrastructure without incurring extensive administration and infrastructure costs. This seamless scaleability of the NetApp systems is a significant advantage for the exploding international ISP market, whose customer base is expected to grow to over 1 million subscribers by the end of 1999.
