The US pulling back from endless overseas conflicts, like the one in Ukraine, doesn’t mean abandoning the West or its values. Since when has Ukraine become the center of the universe? Ukraine did not cause the new paradigm. The US shift on the Ukraine war is a manifestation of the new paradigm, one of many. The norm wrt Western values has been falling away since before the Ukraine war and has been totally lost in our politics since the election. We used to be collaborative, structuring for win-wins. We used to have honor, standing up for values and upholding our commitments as a general rule. We used to treat people with at least a modicum of dignity. We respected truth. We practiced stewardship. We used our heads. Now it's all transactional. Now it's all about grabbing power and wielding power, greasily, rapaciously. Now we plunder; now we punch down; now it's win-loose. Now we line up with the world's authoritarian countries, not the civilized ones. Thoughtfulness is considered "gay." The current position on Ukraine is a product of that loss of values, not the cause.
