It’s not a very clean business. Once, a few years ago, a friend of mine lost access to his brokerage account, about $0.5 million. Later, the brokerage explained to him that someone tried to use his money to buy 100’s of thousands $$ worth of some penny stock. Since it was way out of his trading pattern, the brokerage refused to do it.

The idea, apparently, was for them to buy the stock in question in their own account - and then, use my friend’s account to pump up the stock. After which, the plan must have been for them to sell it - and to short it.
