Obviously, the department stores closed before the tariffs... but it would add to their "costs" that go into calculating if they should stay in business.

My point was it adds up and if you are a small business selling overpriced merchandise to take advantage of shoppers who want to buy from your demographic, and you are replacing broken windows in Oakland and dealing with theft on a regular basis, that last 5% could be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

California is run by a bunch of frigging idiots voted in by a populace that mistakes stupidity for kindness. I had an idiot neighbor try to force me into talking politics when he lamented that the guy who was breaking into homes on his side of the street next to the creek needed our help since he was so poor and "forced" into a life a crime. The PG&E worker who was directing traffic looked shocked and was holding his tongue. I tried to walk away and said "I don't want to discuss politics." He followed me and pressed so I said the high crime is due to well intentioned "people" like him who were not holding other people accountable for bad behavior. It was HIS fault for not putting people like that in jail to act as deterrent to others. The hard-working guy holding the traffic sign trying to stay out of the hot sun smiled...

If they charged the law breakers for the damage they do as well as the merchandise stolen, they would be well over the threshold for a felony. But who cares when they let murder suspects out without bail and act surprised when they murder again?

I've started to write letters to politicians saying that protestors who shut down freeways and bridges thus keeping people from getting to work on time should be JAILED until they MAKE RESTITUTION to all the people for the value of their lost time, be it lost wages or lost time having fun.
