Let me lay my possibly unpopular opinion out there regarding some recent discussions. Feel free to disagree. Communism failed. Capitalism failed Religion failed. Hippy culture failed. (but oh how we tried and it helped stop a war and have better sex and expressing love.) When I was in my late teens and early 20's in school, I believed in a world where EVERONE would come together and choose a collective path. I read the philosophical classics as well as era's psychology classics. My reading predominantly confirmed my beliefs. People could be trusted to become egalitarian. All meaningful motivation was intrinsic. Nurture won the nature-nurture controversy and the Transformation was upon us. Experience taught me things I did not learn at the University. The first lesson was seeing the various new-and-old-age cults take over and advance greed and bullshit in my generation in the seventies and eighties... Economically speaking, failing modern capitalism has self-inflicted pathogens. One is generational privilege vs. meritocracy, and lost opportunity to those potential Jonas Salk's born into shitty circumstances. This is one more source of lost productivity and innovation (dynamism) and a reason for cultural and economic failure. Another is the tax loopholes that make an ugly game out of tax avoidance and tax credits while the infrastructure and environment crumbles. The life of modern socialism (planned/engineered economy etc), also has parasites. It spreads privilege and reward to all, and assumes people will share, stay motivated to work hard, and not game the system. But why work hard for quality products and services when the worker next to you doesn't care and receives the same reward? Rhetorical question: Why don't we have a flat reward system for pro athletes equal to the workers who support them? Daily driving shows me how people (all political ilks, all genders, all races) game regulations when they think they can. When the police in my city virtually stopped traffic enforcement as well as other city codes (long political story) breaking laws became normalized. Enforcement became terrorist police, snitches and "Karens." Again, we need a new economic system, without Marx or Trump; combining free markets and meritocracy with a level playing field of socialism and regulation that raises all ships. Everyone should have health care. All should have access to basic nutrition and basic shelter. All who can should have incentive and opportunity to work. We need much more progressive estate taxes to help pay for this and the infrastructure. p.s. Not everyone wants or uses their expensive advanced education; we need to continue to invest in job training and K-12 teachers and classrooms. We should all agree to this -- here's to a better and wiser age ahead of the current disasters.
