There is a simple answer to your question...you posted:
"I wonder why VTSS is near its highs and
ATML is near its lows. Maybe somebody
knows something?"

My answer:
Up to this point, VTSS has been the leader with the GaAs technology, and the high VTSS stock price has reflected this position and potential. But at the same time, ATML didn't have GaAs or SiGe technology. Now that has changed!

With the advent of the superior SiGe technology -- and the actual DEPLOYMENT of it -- there is new potential for ATML. Conversely, Vitesse now has a new competitor (ATML) with technology superior to GaAs.

Notice, with ATMLs acquisition of the SiGe technology, they obtain a number of SiGe devices "ready to go", on top of the fab technology.

GaAs will become a thing of the past, and SiGe will ascend to a new leadership position. Don't count on my opinion -- ask IBM or Forbes/ASAP's George Gilder. FYI, IBM is just now deploying advanced SiGe devices in certain cell phones. These will supplant GaAs devices in the next few months and years.
