Wrong, it was Germany, which was part of the Austrian-Prussian empire that started the war. The assassination of archduke Ferdinand was the spark, as well as a number of other factors such as the Balkan powder keg. Hitler came to power and started WW II, which involved overrunning Poland, Czechoslovakia, operation Barbarossa, the Anschluss etc. all of which are not related to the treaty of Versailles. Again you apologize for the allies who punished Germany for their aggressive war. You’re echoing the excuses Nazis give.

<<we had to read the guns of August>>

A respected book. It doesn't talk about oil though, does it?

<<Oil became an important element in military power in the decade before World War I when the navies of the great powers, led by Great Britain and the United States, began to switch from coal to oil as their source of power.>>

Oil and world power - Oil

An historical perspective projected in comedic form here...

So were the military of the various combatant Nations concerned about access to large Oil Reserves prior to WW1? Britain projected it's power mainly through it's Navy.

I think most of us have seen, just in recent years, how narratives can be bent to to suit a given outlook.

wmd, Iran, etc.
