....and I am troubled that the Office of the Presidency is being debased over alleged sexual dalliances, even if the intended purpose of all of this is to uncover high crimes and misdemeanors which, I might add, if they exist, should have been brought to the surface and exposed prior to his nomination and election in 1992.

The Office itself can't be debased, IMHO, Holly. Regardless of what heinous acts it's inhabitants may be guilty of, when the inhabitants of the office are found to be lacking in integrity, the only thing they do is make themselves appear smaller and a little more inadequate as men attempting to fill the office of the President.

It [the Office] is eloquently described in my little book, "The Book of the Presidents", from which I've quoted before. I'll leave you with this, again from page 6:

"Shaped both by past Presidents and by forces of of History, the Presidency today challenges the capacities of the most gifted, the most dedicated of men. As the highest officer elected by all the people, the President must serve in place of a king as the Chief of State, the ceremonial head of the government who greets distinguished visitors, awards medals to heroes, and commemorates national events great and small. More important, he is the Chief Executive, directing the executive branch of the Government in its day-to-day operations; he is Chief Diplomat, directing the country's foreign relations; and he is Commander-in-Chief of all the nation's armed forces. Besides these specific duties he has many others; he proposes legislative programs to Congress; he serves as leader of his party; he is spokesman for the country and, at times, he assumes the position of moral leader for the entire free world. When it was a much smaller job, Washington complained of its demands; of the office in mid-twentieth century, Truman said, "No man can really fill the Presidency."

What is troubling to me is that so many Americans have decided that the only thing that really matters is 1) Whether or not their welfare check will still be in the mail on a regular basis; and 2) Whether or not the economy will continue to support large annual gains in their mutual fund retirement money. 3) Whether their President "looks good" on TV.
