I wonder if bussing and the drive to give "equal education" to all income levels has hurt?

Here there was some snobbery associated with being so poor you had to have the state pay for your breakfast and lunch, so the solution was to give free lunches to all kids. Of course, by high school, the rich kids can get into their cars and drive off campus to bring back In-and-Out or whatever.

You can get designer clothes at TJMax and other discounters so that isn't as big a deal. My nephew, now in his 30s, would not wear designer clothes but he's the skinny vegan, wear his hair long and stringy type and never really apply himself while still getting help from family for living expenses. But we had those back in our days too.

I think the big difference is in cell phones, latest iPhone vs a cheap min service to text parents your location and time to be picked up, but I think they are outlawed in schools now.

Maybe educators need to spend time showing kids what we saw when traveling... how outside the big cities and tourist areas in Mexico, people live conditions not much better than the homeless encampments we have here... in fact, I think many of the working RV dweller would rather put the money into renting an RV at $200 a week in an encampment than paying $4,000 a month for rent and then using the money to feed and clothe their kids to get a great, FREE education here while they work the low pay jobs. I've seen kids leave these RVs well dressed and headed to school just a mile away where houses near the school can go as high as $8M to $12M.
