I disagree with the concept of AI makes your brain lazy in the same way that I disagree with calculators make you not understand math and cars make you physically unfit.

It is true that calculators (and all computers) can weaken your mathematical skills. And it is also true that if we had to walk (or ride a horse) to work, school, store, etc. the society be fitter than it is now.

But it is not true that you cannot go to the gym and be buff. There is a subset of society that drives around and uses a few hours of time they save by driving to go to the gym and become fitter that they would have been if they were living in the 1900s.

Similarly, one can certainly use the AI to be mentally stronger, not weaker than without the AI. But it takes self-discipline.

I had an experience this evening that is making me consider the opposite side of the AI makes you dumb argument.

My cell phone contract is up. The telco calls me to say that I can have a cheaper contract with a "free" Pixel 10 phone if I renew it with them.

I tell the rep that I will renew, but I don't need a new phone. Just take off its prices from my bill.

She answer that the price goes up if I don't take the a new phone because that is part of the promo and the non-promo price is higher.

I say this makes no sense to me. Why would I pay a higher price to not get a free phone. Lower the price.

She says, ok, let me find you the right deal. Spends half an hour searching. Then tells that she found a deal where the price will not go up and I will have the same price as the promo without the phone.

Which leads me to think that when the AI becomes as common as tap water, the media will blame it for brainless responses. But this will completely miss the mark that there are already too many brainless people like that rep. AI will be a great step up for her.
