You are probably more correct than you know.

There are other causes of COD problems that people don't consider when placing the blame. Smoking, or operating in dusty environments (including saw mills) will reduce the life expectancy of the Zip. Because, the media and drive heads collect the contaminants.

The clicking sound, comes from the drive resetting in an attempt to dislodge whatever is keeping it from properly track following. I believe that the Zip drive has wipers that it drags the head across during that resetting process (Bernoulli's did).
