Java is so promising. However, putting working software into the hands of users seems to be taking forever. I really had hoped Java would have started making its mark by now.

Intel, UNIX marriage
...But Microsoft's Peter More, an Australian NT product manager, said there were too many variables to predict what would happen to the Alphaprocessor, Merced's chief competitor. (Paradoxically, Intel is now the main Alpha manufacturer, by virtue of a patent dispute settlement with Digital, concluded just before the Compaq takeover.)
