The major players are all building their specific moat that makes the replication argument moot. For example, ChatGPT is so well trained in how I work and think and has good awareness of my projects and interests, that even if there's a cheaper way I am unlikely to switch out.

The real issue is going to be that smaller models are going to be more common and more successful in a majority of cases. This is a key difference with the internet. The internet apps require networking effect to be successful. So the ecosystem favors monopolies. But chatbots are not like that. A doctor doesn't have to use the same model that most doctors use and even if he chooses it he gains little from the network effect.

So as the small language models become more common, are they going to reside on desktops or data centers, or run within the hyperscalers?

That's the question.
