I've considered it to get better with my extremely limited Mandarin - I took a class about 20 years ago to impress my GF's parents and still use it on occasion at restaurants.

Nobody is left to speak French with except maybe my aunt and I didn't hear a single person speak it with her during my uncles funeral last month. She is 5 years younger than my mother would be so she probably didn't get as much of it as my mom did. Growing up we'd hear snickers about her eating a snail at school and it was only recently I put it together to see it was kids teasing her to get her to eat it as my mother never wanted to talk about it.

Now a days if you tease a kid for not learning the local language you are a racist and get in all sorts of trouble...

More fun to learn to swing trade better for making more money or hike or garden or go out to eat to spend some of the money...
