I'm surprised that most people won't go with a $5,000 deductible. That's what I did until Medicare age. It knocked the premium way down, but then that was about 12-15 years ago.

Can't help myself....

<<In my opinion, our health care system is. broken.>>

It's broken because as a nation we are unhealthy....simple as that.

Re. The good news is my wife is fully recovered and has full range of motion. The bad news is that this was a completely unnecessary struggle consuming a lot of effort on our part.

Max, I'm glad your wife has fully recovered, but I can't imagine all the stress you and your wife had to go through, just to get the insurance to pay their part.

Re. I can't imagine how those less fortunate than us must deal with these huge numbers. From what I am reading here, things are only getting worse.

Yes, me neither, but as more and more people can't afford to pay or are not insured, the cost of healthcare will keep going up. It's nuts ,and I don't see any hope on the horizon for things to improve anytime soon. I even hear that medicare premiums have been going up as well (though I don't know for sure).

the cost of the Emergency room visit was roughly $10K !!! But through the insurance management the fee was reduced to $900.
Anecdotal account of emergency room costs in "socialist" Europe. On a trip to Ireland I developed a very nasty eye infection that caused me to visit the ER in Sligo, in the middle of the night. They had an ophthalmologist on duty who inspected my eye and gave me several antibiotics that cleared it up overnight. Flat rate ER fee was 100€. I am not an Irish or EU citizen, just walked in off the street. And to boot, my Medicare Advantage plan reimbursed me the fee minus a small co-pay on return.
