Wow, thanks for sharing your story. I think that is how it should be. The complexity of our system translates into less efficiency and more expensive. Then there are. people at the bottom whose only option is Medicaid or the emergency room.

Did they make you go through a metal detector and ask for your insurance?

If you walk into our local hospital emergency dept, you have to go through a metal detector first. Only after that they would ask for your health insurance. Then if you are lucky, you will be seen by a nurse after some wait for an intake. And only after that and few hours later, will be seen by a doctor. That's been my experience few years ago. I'd do anything to avoid going to the emergency department of a local hospital.

The tradeoff for that is higher income tax rates for the married middle class. 40% in Ireland vs 12% in the USA. That's a huge difference.
