I'm reading (books on tape while hiking) some historical fiction now called "Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett

It is interesting how towns could build wealth with capitalism such as raising sheep for wool then all the steps to turn it to clothing and blankets. A fictional town grew from next to nothing while raising funds to build a cathedral for a church. It was all great until a bishop from another town that hated the priest behind the town's success promised to "forgive/absolve" a knight if he and his men raided the town. They burned the town to the ground and there was no punishment for the bishop or the knight because they both provided people to the king in a civil war with another claimant to the throne.

Anyway, much of our US Constitution is to protect us from too powerful government which seemed to work until they went from funding government with tariffs to funding it with pilfering of the citizenry under the label or "taxes" and "wealth redistribution."

Today it is all about spending money to get the governments at all levels to raise taxes to fund this or that special project be it a trip to Mars, protection against foreign enemies who have no interest in invading our soil, or building homes for the homeless who are that way because of government interference with Darwinism and real charity.

So, I guess society has been trying to figure out a "fair way" to make things work and there is still a huge difference of opinion on how to do it... China vs Russia vs EU vs USA/Canada vs African Mess vs Middle East including India Mess vs South America systems. We're lucky that for now, the best and brightest want to come N. America to prosper and about all the fighting Canada and the US do is over stuff like tariffs and incentives to attract H1B visa talent. That WILL NOT continue if we become too socialist or communist.
