I was at Rona today, and afterward I walked across the large parking lot with my eight-month-old puppy to Starbucks for a small hot chocolate that cost $4.35.

A short hot chocolate from Starbucks is already subject to sales tax. Where I live, we pay both the federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 5% and the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) of 6% on prepared foods and beverages sold in cafés.

On a $4.35 hot chocolate, the combined 11% tax adds $0.48, bringing the total to $4.83 CAD.

If Carney were to impose a sugar tax on top of that, I’d skip Starbucks altogether.
