A few months ago I put on my IT strategy consultant hat and analyzed the big AI players. TL;DR, if we were to map back to the early cloud days, OpenAI is AWS, giving you unsurpassed privacy and fit for purpose modular building blocks and system. Google is Microsoft, giving you an AI that leverages their vast ecosystem to compensate for what they are missing (worst privacy, not good enough building blocks, generally speaking bad AI personality that has to be arm twisted into doing what it was not explicitly designed to do). Meta et al are like Linux and OSS cloud stack. Anthropic is a strong niche player and the adult in the room.

This differentiation was partially by design and partially organic.

From the beginning, OpenAI made delivering an AI that molded itself to the user a key strategic point. This shaped everything else. It meant they gave the best privacy protection so that the users wouldn't hesitate to share their data and thoughts. It meant they glued a personalized memory and adaptor on their engine that acts like a combination of RAG + LoRA or custom system prompt. It derives much everything else that they do.

To put this in perspective, at the time the prevailing view, especially at Google, was who cares if Joe Sixpack likes the AI or comes back to it? AI is for researchers.

So OpenAI and Sam Altman are not some Bond villain come to life. They are just following a business strategy that allows them to compete with much bigger and better funded rivals.
