Japan is having the same problem. You should be looking at the history, and their advances and judge them on that, not some static statistic that has NO meaning with out context! What is important is the fight the women are making in both places because it means they are aware of the misogyny and are fighting it with all their power. And it isn't just the women fighting the 3,000 year old patriarchal society, it is the liberals and those in the arts. South Korea, next to Hollywood, produces the most movies and large numbers of them address Korea's Patriarchal hegemony! The fight against sexism, racism and homophobia, put in context, is how you should be judging any society, and it is a powerful fight, but misogyny is entrenched in most Asian and third world societies, but South Korea and Japan is educating the people and things are changing-fast! Both countries have come a long way in my life time, and in many respects have advanced beyond the US in things like education, and in the end education is what determines a great society like we see in the Nordic countries! PS just look how far Japan and South Korea have come in the last 80 years. South Korea was a third world dictatorship 80 years ago, and today it is the 11th largest GDP in the world and a thriving democracy that has put two or three presidents in jail. And we all know the story of how cruel to women Japan used to be!
