CJ,
Mazda is working on a rotary range extender for the US market, though.
I was closely following Mazda's work on the Wankel engine, a.k.a. the rotary engine that went into the RX-8.

I always thought the RX-8 was a cool vehicle, but unfortunately that rotary engine just wasn't suitable for the general market. Efficiency and emissions were the real killers.

I'm anxious to see whether Mazda can make that rotary engine work as an EV range extender. I'm just not sure, however, given its fundamental flaws.
