>>A very disturbing attitude today has it that EVERYTHING is ok until a government [court] says otherwise. If our only moral compass is the law we are doomed. The absolute explosion in the number of laws going on the books may be evidence that the center is not holding.

An astute observation and it's going to get worse. When society's code of conduct (morality) breaks down, the natural expression is to resort to the law to contain such behavior. That leads to an explosion of laws and a unwieldy legal system where virtually everything is subject to legal sanction.

That's why I say I am a libertarian, sort of. The problem with libertarianism is that it requires a virtuous populace to work. Otherwise libertarianism can degenerate into libertinism, snowballing the deconstruction and ultimately the destruction of society.

I find this anything BUT disturbing. I find it reassuring. I really, really don't want to be told what is "ok" and what is not by, say, my next door neighbor. Nor do I assume you want to be told what's "ok" by me.
