Israel had levied sanctions against Haaretz a year ago and pulled all advertising.

Haaretz, which is an independent daily newspaper, has been publishing since 1919, and has frequently been the target of right-wing administrations.

The British government did the same thing in 2014. They specifically threatened the Guardian newspaper for disclosing information about the wars and the government's eavesdropping on electronic communications. Both the Independent and Guardian had covered the role of the US and its coalition in training, arming, and supporting Islamist mercenaries in Libya and Syria. That public knowledge probably contributed to the defeat of the prime minister's introduction of a war authorization against Syria in 2012.
