Forty Years Ago Today: How weather played a role in the loss of the Challenger and Crew

I remember it like I was yesterday. Heard the bulletin on the radio, driving to lunch.

Even in Canada, where we are more used to inclement winter weather, this has been a tough week.Temperatures in Saskatchewan were hitting -50C with wind chill, and people were essentially told to shelter at home. I have worked in the weather this cold and it takes a huge tolls on engines and other machinery. When I was working on an oil rig in -30-40C -- we had to shut down if it got colder -- there was a constant hazard from metal breaking off the derrick and hitting us because it had become so brittle.

Temperatures also were well below normal from Ontario east, but the biggest problems were caused by huge dumps of snow, up to half a metre. On Monday, over half the flights out of Toronto's Pearson Airport, by far the busiest in Canada, were cancelled. Now Toronto has a problem with where to put all the snow they are removing from streets.

And I was unhappy because temperatures on the West Coast were down to -5C. It's all what you are used to. I am enjoying the current 9C with rain and wind much more.

Extreme Temperature Diary- Wednesday January 28, 2026/ Main Topic: Winter Storm Fern’s Cold Wave Aftermath – Guy On Climate

Illustration of how persistent and near record warmth (relative) in the Arctic - and the Greenland-Canadian Tundra block - is suppressing the Polar Vortex South, and is responsible for the generational #cold event in #Florida and expected SE Coast #blizzard 1/

Holy cow 🐄 This has to be a first!! I was checking on the impacts of the SE Coast Blizzard, and noticed that #Tampa Bay has been highlighted in NOAA’s Winter Storm Severity Index for a “small” chance of #snow impacts. So, yes, I’m saying there’s a chance 😂
