Interesting note. One thing that would be interesting to find (which will never happen) would be to see what kind of clock rates you could get on Intel process of Cyrix M2 design, optimized for Intel process.

We would know if it is the design of PII that is the major contributor to the ability to achieve higher clock rates, or if it is the process technology and the fact that PII was designed specifically for this process technology.

All I know is that if I were in charge of selecting Intel's final design, and the low Mhz implementation team announced that their design had 5% better performance/cost than that of the high Mhz team, I would without blinking choose the high Mhz one.

From marketing point of view you may be right, but isn't the heat generation negatively affected by high MHz rating?
