Christine, by me anything that polarizes the citizenry against a cancerously bloated government is a very large plus. Waco, Ruby Ridge, and sundry other under-reported incidents are the most extreme examples of how power corrupts. Most of us have not been equipped to evaluate the economic damage or corruption in the social fabric caused by government interventions to the spontaneous ordering of a society with the minimalist government originally intended here. Re militia, some, probably most are scary indeed. To some extent they are the creation of a government that continually insists on using big sticks to stupidly poke hornet's nests.
