Surething, public opinion seems to be a fickle beast, and difficult to predict. I remember being surprised at just how fast George Bush's approval polls went down, after being very high during and just after the Gulf War. And JFK's approval polls were hovering around 40% (maybe lower, I don't remember exactly) at the time he was in Dallas. In fact JFK specifically insisted on riding in a convertible in Dallas to attempt to get closer and be more open with the people (as you may know). He was very concerned that his approval poll ratings were so low. Now the man is considered by most Americans to have been a great man, one of the great Presidents. My dad, a staunch Republican, was misty-eyed and reverent when he visited JFK's grave site at Arlington.

Clinton is certainly enjoying the good graces of the people right now, and it will be interesting to see how things play out.
