Dear David;

There is no question that my comments pertain exclusively to e-mail that is sent on the company's network. Clearly, if one is using his or her equipment, then the company has no right to read that person's e-mail. However, the company does have the right to monitor an employee's access to and usage of his or her AOL account if the employee is using the company's equipment to do so. And this simply makes a lot of sense. Can you imagine a key employee at a sensitive position in a company immediately disseminating information about the company to a large internet audience? Finally, kudos to Shane for the dignified and thorough manner in which he responded to this issue. Shane is the best.
