I think we only need go back to 1994 to see that "diversity of investment styles" has much merit. My S&P500 Index fund (FUSEX) made 1% in 1994 while my investment in MNGFX was up 20%. Without dividends, the index funds were actually down in '94.

Pete, good post. Inextricably interwoven with your list was the baneful influence of Keynes, later the likes of Samuelson and Heilbroner. I suspect we're in a recovery period from those delusions.

Lot of bumps in the road, but I think there's reason for optimism.
