Holly,

>>Thanks for posting that. I see Kenneth Starr and his ilk as self-perpetuating menaces,
in the same category as Tailgunner Joe McCarthy. It does disturb me that the US
Constitution is not mentioned or even alluded to in the article.
<<

I'm all for the constitution, but where in the constitution does it say that an elected official, just by virtue of his position, can evade the inquiries of legally appointed authorities?

Could you or I have held off the police for 24 hours while we ransacked Vince Foster's office and then removed the papers to safer grounds? Could we summon hundreds of FBI files of our political opponents to our home, there to peruse them for a year or so, before it was accidentally discovered they were there?
Mr. C. has been accused of many things the investigation of which has been impeded because of his position, including the looting of a bank in Arkansas and the possibility of a payoff disguised as cattle futures trades.

So despite Starr's occasional heavy handedness, some of us aren't so prompt to defend the Clintons' rights when they have thumbed their noses at all the bona fide efforts to investigate their acts in the past.

Jack

Holly,, And Menacing they should be, if you are a criminal . Would you suggest they just pack up and leave at the first scream when drilling to close to a nerve. I think this type of ability in a country is what distinguishes it from much less desirable places to live, and strengthens the constitution. As far as McCarthy , I think that was power going after the weak, and not even close to what we have here. The self perpetuating part , I don't quite get. In short I think you have the shoe on the wrong foot. Personally I don't really care if Slick Boinked Monica, but what does intrigue me is all the legal wrangling and stonewalling and the fact that the steady flow of BS from "Self Perpetuating" politicians can be and is under scrutiny by someone other than another "Self perpetuating " politician.

russell
PS,, the menacing appearance is probably fostered in large part due to
roadblock stance of the defendants..

Holly:

I'll bet you are pretty selective on your outrage about constitutional excesses. Congress has every right to pass the independent counsel law. This thing may be ugly, but it is in the grand tradition of limited, divided government.

In America, no man should be above the law. If Starr had violated the law, certainly Janet Reno would have fired him. Or the President can fire Reno and appoint someone who will. It's as simple as that. Where are the constitutional dangers in that?

I think you are more concerned about covering up the Woodstock morals in the Whitehouse from political embarrassment than any constitutional problem.

What you should have been indignant about was the mantra of 'personal character doesn't matter' that got Clinton elected.

Regards,

Bruce
