He originally opposed it - it ran completely contrary to official and historic Tory policy. Liberals were the party of free trade traditionally.
So we had Mulroney bringing in free trade and John Turner opposing it! Turner had no respect at all in Ottawa because it was well known that he was in fact a free trader - in spite of his comments to the contrary. There is nothing new about any of this it seems to have been always thus - the Liberals have been going along with the anti-
Sadaam saber rattling of the U.S. When in opposition, Chretien and Axworthy were bitterly against the Desert Storm operation.

As a newcomer to this string, I will now withdraw from further political discussion!

In (British) Officers Messes there were three forbidden subjects - politics, religion, and women (!) - remember officers in those days were overwhelmingly male (I am somewhat ancient).
